Update: They have now fixed the CSS typo.
—————–
The BBC have launched a new design for the News and Sport home pages.
They have finally centred the design which means I can’t use the BBC as an example of a left aligned design any more when clients say that all websites are centred. Which is a shame as I like left aligned sites…
What is really interesting is that they are now designing for a 1024 width rather than the old 800 width. Means that 1024 widths are now main stream. Which is great news for those that design websites, gives them more room to play with.

However they haven’t got the design 100% in all browsers, something I would get a nagging from Dave about! I have yet to look at the News home page with in Windows but with Firefox 2 on Linux the BBC news strap line has a 2 pixel extra border along the bottom. Its actually a background colour on the div element that contains the strapline graphic which is not needed as far as I can tell.
Happens to the best of us I suppose….

Hey, now I wasn’t going to pull you up on your grammar, but it is very amusing that you have now used the other form of “its” incorrectly. I’m only writing this so that James doesn’t look like a complete pedant!
Anyway, back OT. Have you noticed that the BBC internal news category pages e.g. “Business” are still 800px wide with a bit of whitespace to the right?
That’s a bit lame!
I think how it works is if there is a news story published after the launch of the design the portal section gets the new design also.
Their CMS seems to keep old designs for ever and doesn’t update old content with new designs. You can still find old stories with the last but one design.
As for my grammar, I’m blaming firefox for not having a grammar plugin and the spell checker for saying its is valid!
They’ve also updated the help page header and included a simple but effective rollover effect on the logo. http://bbc.co.uk/help/
You know, I don’t think that rollover is so effective; the “click logo to go home” concept is so ubiqutious that I really don’t see a need to explain it any further.
In fact, my first instinct was to mouse back off again to click the word “Home” (which of course disappeared).
Anyway, I like the new design, and when you read what technologies the developers use it seems a miracle the site is even mildly dynamic.
