In our spare time [ha!] we’ve teamed up with a pretty cool advertising agency on a not-for-profit (yet) side project that lets you share your spare desk with interesting individuals who might need it.
The way we’re developing this compact web application is slightly different to how most web apps are born (i.e. absolute secrecy) : we’re planning and discussing everything about the project on a public blog, welcoming comments and input from anyone who’s interested.
Right now we’re telling the World about it and gathering views, advice, and expressions of interest. So if you’re interested, have a read and get involved.

Uh, cool! What’s in it for the person with the spare desk? How will the site cope with crazy people? So many questions!
Also, the “have a read” link is broken.
Link fixed.
Well part of the challenge is going to be to sell it to the people with the desks. We’re going for the ‘just for the hell of it; to network; to be nice to a stranger; to meet some interesting people’ argument. I actually think this is quite strong amongst smaller, open minded companies.
As far as dealing with the crazies goes, we’re thinking that both the desk owners, and the desk users get to rate each other, so we get a bit of a trusted network going on the site. Ultimately you’re unlikely to leave a random stranger sitting in your office on his own with all your gadgets anyway.
