Exploring personal carbon trading

CarbonLimited

An RSA project to explore the practicalities and issues associated with personal carbon trading. The CarbonDAQ platform that we built allowed participants to footprint their carbon emissions and trade any surpluss or deficit with other participants.

Nectar card data integration

As well as lots of social networking goodies like groups and messaging, this impressive site also grabbed real data from participants' Nectar cards about the fuel they were purchasing at BP service stations.  Pilot groups of RSA fellows (i.e. high achievers in the design world, not "for he's a very good...". Obviously.) could then trade carbon allowances with each other based on their actual car-related emissions.

Using DEFRA emissions data

When calculating footprints, the system was also using up-to-the minute DEFRA data on emissions from AMEE so that it matched the government's ActOnCO2 calculator.  It was all very clever.

The future...

The project is over now, but watch this space as we're working with the Local Government Information Unit on CarbonLimited Mark II : all about community carbon trading.  We're very excited about this one...
