Experienced Frontend Developer

The opportunity

We’re looking for a motivated and experienced developer with a strong focus on front end to join our team of talented developers working on innovative products within small, multi-disciplinary project teams.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with commercial JavaScript experience and who is looking for that next challenge to drive their career forward.

Alongside your core development responsibilities you will also have the opportunity to take an active role in all stages of product development, from initial idea generation, through prototyping and user validation, to eventual release and iterative improvement. While the focus of this role is Front end development there is also the opportunity to work on backend projects - so we will be interested to hear about any experience, especially using Python.

This is a full-time role in our Oxford office.

Example projects

Some of the impactful front end projects we work on include:

  • Using D3 to visualise patient risk in Intensive Care Units
  • Building a data visualisation platform for soil and weather sensors in Angular/HighCharts
  • Creating a prototype for an energy management tool using Vue.js

How we work

We are passionate about Agile delivery, and seek to continuously improve our processes to deliver maximum value to our clients.

We work with a range of clients, from small startups to big brands on projects that span from early prototypes through to large software builds.

The role

As a member of the technology team you'll play a critical role in delivering web solutions following lean, agile and continuous delivery principles. You will have the support of our Tech Lead and Senior developers and a generous training and development programme so you can keep progressing your own skills and career.

You will also play a key role in the further shaping and championing of our Front end strategy and feed into our wider Tech Team's ways of working and overall company tech strategy.

Working in cross-disciplinary teams of talented product strategists, UI/UX designers, project managers and fellow developers, you must have a strong desire to improve yourself and learn from others, and a willingness to participate in and contribute to our culture of learning and sharing.

Essential skills and experience

  • Strong HTML, CSS/SASS, and responsive web design skills
  • Commercial JavaScript experience ideally including React or Vue.js
  • Experience of charting/visualisation libraries such as HighCharts and D3
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Great client-facing and internal communication skills, written and verbal
  • A commitment to learning, developing and sharing knowledge

Desirable skills and experience

  • Agency experience
  • Experience of Django or Flask
  • Experience of Test- and Behaviour-Driven Development (TDD/BDD)
  • Collaborating on API development using tools like Apiary and/or Swagger
  • Experience of Agile methodology (Scrum or Kanban)
  • Experience of using our preferred tools - JIRA, Harvest, Slack

Your responsibilities

  • Delivering high quality Front end web solutions
  • Accurate and consistent reporting on project status
  • Helping create a positive working environment based on our culture of being collaborative, open, flexible and social
  • Building strong relationships both internally with our teams and externally with your clients
  • Sharing what you learn with the wider Digital Community, through blogging, conferences and meetups

Our ideal candidate

A mid/senior level developer with a demonstrable talent for Front end software development, and a proven ability to architect and deliver projects working as part of a team.

We'll expect you to be an excellent communicator, able to collaborate with team members on solutions and proactively keep project managers up to date on progress.

You'll be a conscientious developer, seeking out responsibility and taking a share of ownership in the quality of the wider project, not just your tasks.
